    The Southampton Union Free School District Board of Education is pleased to announce the anticipated appointment of Dr. Fatima Morrell as the next Southampton Superintendent of Schools, effective July 8. The appointment follows an extensive search process that included soliciting community feedback through surveys and forums and collaborating with Eastern Suffolk BOCES to identify the best candidate to meet the needs of the district. A seasoned administrator with more than 30 years of educational experience, Dr. Morrell is coming to Southampton from the Buffalo Public Schools system. Throughout her career, Dr. Morrell has been honored for her forward-thinking educational approach, including as recipient of the National School Boards Association 2023 Magna Award and Buffalo’s Excellence in Education 2023 “Trailblazer of the Year” Award,

    Exploring Latin art

    Members of the Southampton High School Latino Culture and Art clubs recently visited the Parrish Art Museum to explore the Simon Vega exhibition. Vega is a Salvadoran artist who presents a connection between space and the tropical landscape. He represents capitalism using tropical/Latin materials such as toys, textiles, house appliances, plants, furniture and more to create space sculptures such as astronaut suits.

    Basketball game unites the community

    Themed “Autism Awareness Night,” a Southampton High School varsity basketball game brought the community together on Jan. 19. The evening featured a varsity game between the Mariners and Whalers and a halftime unified basketball game in a gym decorated by community service club members and parent volunteers. The event raised $5,800 for the Flying Point Foundation through raffles and T-shirt and snack sales.

The Shinnecock and other Native peoples have shaped our community and our country. This month we honor the Shinnecock Nation and hundreds of Tribal Nations who continue exercising their inherent sovereignty.
