Grade 1 - Life Along the Shore

  • Students will continue to explore the history and culture of Long Island's Indian peoples. Students will examine murals and photographs to learn about Shinnecock lands and it's people.

This is Cholena.  She and her family live on the Shinnecock Indian Reservation.
Shinnecock is an Algonquian word meaning “ stony place “ or “shore”.  She is seen here with a traditional canoe and shelter called a wigwam.  Shinnecock people relied on natural resources for food, clothing, transportation, and shelter.
