Themed “Autism Awareness Night,” a Southampton High School varsity basketball game brought the community together on Jan. 19. The evening featured a varsity game between the Mariners and Whalers and a halftime unified basketball game in a gym decorated by community service club members and parent volunteers. The event raised $5,800 for the Flying Point Foundation through raffles and T-shirt and snack sales.
Southampton art students create impressive movie posters Southampton High School Media Arts students, under the direction of art teacher Justine Moody, were recently challenged to create a blockbuster movie poster using several layers of superimposed imagery, complex filters and effects. Here are just a few of the pieces created by these incredibly talented digital artists.
November is Native American Heritage Month. Throughout the month, SHS will recognize the invaluable contributions of Native peoples. The Shinnecock and other Native peoples have shaped our community and our country. This month we honor the Shinnecock Nation and hundreds of Tribal Nations who continue exercising their inherent sovereignty.
Southampton Intermediate School home and career students were recently trained in infant and adult CPR and first aid. The students received the training in their class throughout the week of Oct. 23. Instructing the classes was Joe Hurley of Southampton Village Volunteer Ambulance Company.
The Southampton High School girls soccer team recently hosted two successful fundraisers. In October, the athletes raised $1,000 as part of the annual breast cancer awareness campaign, Kicks for Cancer. In September, they had raised $950 for Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Those funds were donated to the Daniela Conte Foundation of Long Island.
Southampton Intermediate School students recently marked Unity Day by wearing orange and participating in a variety of kindness activities. Unity Day aims to encourage students to promote acceptance, inclusion and kindness and send the message that no one should ever experience bullying.
Southampton Intermediate School eighth grade home and career students recently participated in a fire safety workshop. During the in-class presentation, Southampton Fire Chief Manny Escobar spoke to the students about proper use of a fire extinguisher, fire and CO2 alarms, and the department’s Juniors Program. Students also had the opportunity to practice using a fire extinguisher through a simulator.
