Through a new initiative, Southampton High School shop students will have the opportunity to shadow energy service professionals while they enhance the district’s buildings with energy-efficient facility improvements in the fall.
“This initiative allows students to explore possible job opportunities and careers in the construction field, be it architectural, environmental, procedural or electrical,” said Nancy Wicker, coordinator of instructional practices and staff development. “It also gives students knowledge about what is occurring in their school building.”
As part of the initiative, interested students learn from energy performance contractors and energy system group professionals both virtually and in real time based on students’ schedules. Already, several interested students met with representatives of the companies during a “get to know us” Zoom meeting on May 12.
The initiative was made possible, said Wicker, through the construction company EPC, which has been fostering student involvement across several other districts it works with.
