Coders Qualify for Finals

Yassine Boukaissi and Augusto Fernandes-Jimenez

Students in Southampton Intermediate School coding classes have qualified to compete in the New York Cyber Robotics Coding Competition Finals on Dec. 11.

To earn a spot in the competition, 40 Southampton students, under the direction of teachers Mei-Lynn Guerrero and Michelle Rottkamp, competed against 30 schools in the state in three rounds of online coding qualification challenges. The seventh- and eighth-graders strategized together to finish in the top 10, which qualified them for the finals. This is the first year the school participated in this competition, which uses a cloud-based simulation platform featuring a 3D animated robot to test students’ coding skills.

Students Yassine Boukaissi and Augusto Fernandes-Jimenez were selected to represent their school during the in-person finals at the Cradle of Aviation Museum in Garden City.
