Open house: Southampton carpentry program
Southampton High School will hold an open house for its new BOCES building trades elective course and two-year carpentry/residential construction elective program on Tuesday, Aug. 27 from 3-6:30 p.m. at Southampton High School, 141 Narrow Lane, Southampton.
During the event, participants will be able to tour the school’s new carpentry classroom and learn more about the courses being offered. In the building trades course, students will be taught five construction trades — electrical, masonry, concrete finishing, plumbing and carpentry. Those enrolled in the two-year elective program will gain technical training to prepare for entry-level employment or higher in residential construction, home improvement or related fields.
Along with the informative tour, the new program’s teacher, Benny Diaz, will be on hand to answer questions.
Diaz joins the school district with vast practical experience. Since 2012, he has owned and operated Aleso Inc./Beyond the Finish Inc., where he oversees a team of foremen, interprets blueprints and schematics, provides cost estimates for construction projects, maintains construction records and ensures the safety of employees. He previously served as a project manager for Uprite Plus Contracting, for which he designed, built and repaired structures, including windows, doors, cabinets and furniture. He holds an associate degree from Liberty University.
“I promise to work diligently to impart foundational skills and lessons to my students,” Diaz said of his new instructional role. “Doing so will help propel them to discover a career path in the trades industry.” He plans to accomplish this through positivity and inspiration.
