Putting a smile to a face
A new smile campaign in the Southampton School District is putting smiles on the faces of students and staff alike.
Spearheaded by school resource officers Tiffany Lubold and Lisa McCulley of the Southampton Village Police Department, the initiative aims to make smiles contagious even if they are covered by masks. Each student and staff member is being outfitted with a personal pin that depicts their smiling face.
“With safe health practices, we realized we no longer saw the beautiful smiles and facial expressions that make our daily interactions so meaningful,” said Lubold. “Officer Lisa and I thought, why not make buttons with everyone’s smiling faces to display?”
To date, over 1,000 buttons have been handed out across the district, with more on the way. The officers also intend to expand the program to Our Lady of the Hamptons and assist the East Hampton School District with additional buttons.
“These simple buttons serve as a reminder that students can always look to trusted adults for social and emotional well-being,” said Southampton High School Assistant Principal Sara Smith. “Though we may be covered by a mask, it is uplifting to know we are all smiling underneath thanks to Officer Tiffany and Officer Lisa.”
