Southampton Intermediate School students in Kristen Minter’s and Dr. Victor Cordova’s Spanish language arts classes recently created guantes de cartón — cardboard gloves — following a study of the life of Felipe Alou, an MLB player and manager from the Dominican Republic who grew up in poverty in the 1950s.
To help students understand what it was like to be Alou, teachers encouraged them to design baseball gloves using cardboard boxes and common items such as paper and string. The students then tested their gloves and participated in a discussion about baseball and Alou’s life.
