Southampton Elementary School recently donated over 100 beautifully painted cancer awareness rocks to the Phillips Family Cancer Center at Stony Brook Southampton. The rocks will be displayed in a new rock garden.
The initiative was brought to fruition as part of a collaboration between Southampton Elementary School’s student council, under the direction of advisors Lisa Carew and Annemarie Calogrias, and third and fourth grade students, led by teacher Andrew DeLeo.
“We are so proud of this worthwhile endeavor and the support of our colleagues, students and local community members, who help provide love, kindness and words of encouragement to cancer patients and their families,” said Carew.
Carew said the project was initiated in an effort to give back. She teamed up with Laureen Richard Holt of the Phillips Center after meeting her during her own cancer journey at a Sailing Heals event. “I am deeply grateful to be able to give back and teach our students firsthand what it means to be a survivor, as well as to volunteer and reach out to help others,” said Carew.
