Southampton High School juniors and seniors in John Walsh’s astronomy class had the opportunity to launch rockets as part of a lesson on the exploration of space via spacecraft, probes and landers.
Along with the launch, the lesson culminated with a viewing of the movie "October Sky," which tells the story of Homer Hickam, a young man from a very poor, rural town who had dreams of becoming something other than a coal miner. He went on to become an engineer who helped to build rocket engines for NASA’s space shuttle program.
“Hopefully, my students learned something about flight, aerodynamics, Newton's Laws of Motion and, most importantly, reaching for the stars,” said Walsh.
