Grammy-winning music group visits Southampton Elementary

Southampton Elementary School was buzzing with excitement as it welcomed Grammy-winning children’s music group 123 Andrés to perform on March 11. The dynamic Colombian duo of Andrés Salguero and Christina Sanabria captivated students with their engaging children's music in both English and Spanish.

The event aligned with the Southampton School District’s mission to embrace and celebrate different cultures and languages. It was also a perfect fit for the school's bilingual program. Students from pre-K to fourth grade had the opportunity to participate in the enriching experience, learning and singing in Spanish, English and even American Sign Language. Themes such as embracing diverse music genres, learning the Spanish alphabet, and understanding community and geography were woven into the performance, leaving a lasting impact on both teachers and students.

Kindergarten bilingual teacher Marilyn Rodriguez spearheaded the event by securing grant funds from the Southampton Teachers Association and the Southampton Elementary School Parent Teacher Organization. Rodriguez said she saw this event as an incredible opportunity to enhance her students' bilingual learning experience, ensuring that the impact of the event would be felt long after the music had faded away.

123 Andrés won Best Latin Children’s Album at the Latin Grammys for their album “We Grow Together Preschool Songs” in 2024, alongside securing two other nominations in the same category.
