Southampton Elementary custodian’s murals unite school

The creative artwork of Jonathon Hancock, a four-year custodian at Southampton Elementary School, is connecting students to art and their school.

As part of an initiative this year to provide students with new spaces, including a sensory room and a student lounge, administrators, students, staff and members of the PTO collaborated to design the new spaces that Hancock brought to life with his artistic talents.

Over the past several months, Hancock worked during his shift and his free time to paint an impressive mural in the new sensory room that incorporates sensory items affixed to the wall. The sensory items integrate tactiles that Hancock made from reclaimed materials, including yarn that he used to crochet shapes. He also added glow-in-the-dark paint and lights for further ambiance.

The new student lounge, which sits just off the school’s cafeteria, provides a space for students to relax. The walls are painted with soothing shapes that Hancock designed.

Hancock also started adding murals to the cafeteria walls. The murals carry a sea theme that he said connects the school to the community.

As each of Hancock’s murals are painted, students eagerly await the next part to be finished. They offer him suggestions for colors and design and present him with their own drawings. They are invested in the progress and the process.

Hancock says art has always been a hobby and a passion of his and he is happy to have the opportunity to share it with the students of Southampton Elementary.
