Roles and Responsibilities of Elementary School Psychologist
Counseling/Behavioral Support
- Provide individual and group counseling services to students
- Provide mental health/behavioral crisis prevention and intervention services
- Provide behavioral support and establish positive reinforcement system for students
- Participate in mental health team meetings, crisis team meetings, etc.
Assessment and Evaluation
- Conduct comprehensive psychological and academic assessments to identify learning disabilities, developmental delays, or emotional/behavioral issues. This includes initial evaluations and re-evaluations
- Interpret results and write detailed reports to guide individualized education plans (IEPs.
- Conduct classroom observations
- Create Prior Written Notices for Re-evaluations
- Conduct preschool screenings
Committee Member of the CSE as School Psychologist
- Presentation and interpretation of results at CSE meeting
- Entry of information into IEP direct, including all standardized results, evaluation report and summary of psychoeducational results
- Collaboration and determination of classification based on evaluative results, teacher reports and information shared at meeting
Consultation/Collaboration
- Member of the Student Support Team (SST)
- Consult with teachers and staff about classroom strategies, student behavior, and instructional techniques
- Work with parents to understand and support their child’s needs
- Collaborate with special education teams, including administration, special education teachers, general education teachers, speech therapists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, and social workers (attend student team meetings)
- Participate in the STAT (safety) team and building level safety team
Advocacy and Compliance
- Ensure students receive services in compliance with federal and state regulations (e.g., IDEA)
- Advocate for appropriate educational services and accommodations for students with special needs
- Maintain confidentiality and ethical standards as set by the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP)
