Students Honor Día De Los Muertos Through Cuisine and Art

Students in Dianna D’Amico’s family and consumer sciences classes at Southampton High School recently engaged in a hands-on exploration of cultural appreciation versus appropriation, using the traditions of Día de los Muertos as a meaningful learning lens. As part of the unit, they examined the history and significance behind the symbols, colors and textures found in authentic Día de los Muertos art and then honored those traditions by baking sweet conchas from scratch. They also used clay to create pieces inspired by traditional motifs.
