Southampton High School students in Dianna D’Amico’s Pop Culture, Fashion and Style class recently transformed music into meaningful works of art with their creations that they gifted to the freestyle artists who inspired them.
As part of the project, the students studied lyrics from a range of freestyle artists, drawing inspiration from the themes, emotions and storytelling in the music. Using a variety of artistic media, they each created an original piece that reflected their interpretation of the lyrics.
To culminate the experience, D’Amico presented the students’ work to the artists on their behalf, sharing both the finished pieces and the students’ interpretations behind them.
The artists were moved by the creativity and insight demonstrated in the pieces, sharing them on social media. The students’ work was also on display at the Southampton Arts Center as part of the inaugural “First Light” student art exhibit.
